Home Sauna FAQ
What types of saunas do you carry?
We carry two main categories of home saunas. Indoor infrared saunas from SteamSpa — pre-built hemlock wood cabins with carbon panel heaters that operate at 120–140°F, designed for bedrooms, basements, or spare rooms. Available in 1–5 person configurations from around $1,700 to $3,100. Outdoor barrel and cabin saunas from Dundalk LeisureCraft — traditional Finnish-style saunas with wood-burning or electric heaters, available as classic barrel shapes or full cabin designs with changerooms. Starting around $5,600 and up to $12,000+ for larger cabin models. Both categories ship free to the contiguous US.
What is the difference between an infrared sauna and a traditional outdoor sauna?
The key difference is how they heat the body. Infrared saunas use light panels that heat the body directly at lower air temperatures (120–140°F) — quieter, easier to use daily, and very energy-efficient. Traditional saunas (like our Dundalk LeisureCraft barrel and cabin models) heat the air using a wood-burning stove or electric heater to 160–195°F, creating the classic hot-air Finnish experience. Traditional saunas take longer to heat up (30–60 minutes) but deliver a more intense, authentic experience. Both provide documented health benefits — the right choice depends on your temperature preference, available space, and whether you want an indoor or outdoor installation.
Why is a barrel sauna shaped that way — is it more than just aesthetics?
The barrel shape is functional, not just decorative. The curved walls naturally direct hot air in a circular pattern, which means the sauna heats up faster and more evenly than a square room where heat pools at the top. The curved ceiling also means there is less dead air space to heat, improving efficiency. Dundalk LeisureCraft barrel saunas are built from naturally rot-resistant Western red cedar, which handles outdoor weather — sun, rain, and snow — extremely well over time. The result is a sauna that is both faster to heat and more durable outdoors than most conventional designs.
Are outdoor saunas durable in rain, snow, and harsh weather?
Yes — when built from the right materials. The Dundalk LeisureCraft saunas we carry are constructed from Western red cedar, one of the most weather-resistant woods available. Cedar contains natural oils that resist moisture, insects, and decay, and it handles the repeated expansion and contraction from heating and cooling without cracking or warping. Proper placement (level ground, good drainage underneath) and an annual light oiling of the exterior wood extends the life significantly. Most Dundalk LeisureCraft saunas are designed and tested for year-round use in Canadian winters — making them well-suited for virtually any US climate.
How many people fit in a barrel sauna, and will tall people be comfortable?
Our Dundalk LeisureCraft barrel saunas range from compact 2-person models up to 6-person cabin designs. A typical 4-person barrel sauna comfortably seats 2–3 adults lying on the benches, or 4 sitting upright. For taller users: the curved walls mean headroom is highest at the center of the bench — a 6-foot person sitting upright in a standard barrel sauna will have adequate headroom, though the walls taper on the sides. If headroom is a priority, our cabin-style models (like the Georgian Cabin series) offer full rectangular interior space with no curved walls and standing room throughout.
How long does an outdoor sauna take to heat up?
A barrel sauna with a wood-burning stove typically reaches optimal sauna temperature (160–180°F) in 30–45 minutes. Electric-heated models take a similar amount of time but offer the convenience of remote or timed pre-heating. The barrel shape's efficiency means these times are generally faster than equivalent square cabin saunas. For spontaneous use, many owners pre-heat the sauna while preparing for the session — by the time you have changed and gotten ready, the sauna is at temperature.
Which is better for me: an indoor infrared sauna or an outdoor barrel sauna?
It comes down to space, lifestyle, and the experience you want. Choose an indoor infrared sauna if: you live in an apartment or home without outdoor space, you want a low-effort daily wellness habit, you prefer a gentler heat, or you want to be ready in under 15 minutes. Choose an outdoor barrel or cabin sauna if: you have backyard space and want an authentic high-heat Finnish experience, you enjoy the ritual of wood-firing and the outdoor setting, or you are looking for a permanent wellness investment that enhances your property. Both deliver proven health benefits — it is largely a lifestyle and preference decision.
How much does it cost to run a sauna each month?
Indoor infrared saunas are very economical — typically $10–20 per month at average US electricity rates for 3–4 sessions per week. They plug into a standard 120V outlet. Outdoor barrel saunas with wood-burning stoves require firewood — cost depends on local wood prices and frequency of use, but typically $20–50 per month for regular use. Electric-heated outdoor models use more power than infrared but offer the convenience of timed heating; expect $25–50 per month for regular use. All options are significantly cheaper than equivalent spa or gym memberships over time.
Do outdoor saunas add value to a home?
Yes — particularly well-built outdoor barrel and cabin saunas in good condition. Premium outdoor saunas from established brands like Dundalk LeisureCraft are considered permanent wellness installations and can increase home value by $5,000–$15,000 in markets where outdoor living and wellness amenities are valued. They photograph exceptionally well and are a meaningful differentiator in real estate listings. Indoor infrared units are generally treated as portable fixtures and have less impact on resale value, though they can be taken with you when you move.

Yes. All saunas ship free to the contiguous 48 US states with no sales tax (except Wyoming). As an authorized dealer for both SteamSpa and Dundalk LeisureCraft, every purchase includes the full manufacturer warranty.
