Drop-In Bathtub FAQ
What is a drop-in bathtub?
A drop-in bathtub is a tub designed to be set into a pre-built deck or surround — the tub rim rests on top of the deck surface, and the tub body drops below it. This creates a clean, built-in look where only the interior of the tub is visible. Drop-in tubs are typically the most flexible installation type: they can be paired with any deck material (tile, stone, wood, quartz) and positioned in virtually any layout — alcove, island, peninsula, or corner. They are a popular choice for bathroom renovations where the deck and surround are being built or rebuilt.
What is the difference between a drop-in tub and an alcove or freestanding tub?
An alcove tub (the most common type) fits into a three-wall enclosure with a finished front skirt — no deck required, minimal installation effort, typically the most affordable option. A drop-in tub requires a built deck or surround and offers more design flexibility in shape and positioning, but involves more construction work. A freestanding tub stands independently on the floor with no deck or surround — maximum design impact, but requires enough open floor space and usually a floor-mounted faucet. If you are doing a full bathroom renovation and want a custom, built-in look, a drop-in is often the best choice.
Many of your drop-in tubs include a shower door — what does that mean?
Many ANZZI drop-in tubs in our collection are bundled with a frameless glass shower door or enclosure — giving you both a soaking tub and a shower in the same footprint. This is a popular configuration for bathrooms where space is limited or where a separate shower stall is not practical. The glass panels are tempered safety glass and the hardware is typically available in chrome, brushed nickel, or matte black finishes. Check each product listing to confirm what is included — some bundles include the door and hardware; others include the tub only.
What sizes are available?
The majority of drop-in tubs in our collection are 5-foot (60 inch) models — the standard size for most US bathroom alcoves and deck builds. Widths typically range from 30" to 36", and soaking depth from 18" to 22". Before ordering, measure your available floor space and confirm the deck opening dimensions match the tub's rim size. Also measure your doorway and the path through the home — drop-in tubs are rigid and cannot be tilted the same way alcove tubs can, so clearance matters at delivery.
What are drop-in tubs made from?
All drop-in tubs in our collection are made from acrylic reinforced with fiberglass. Acrylic is the most popular bathtub material for good reason: it is lightweight (easier to install than cast iron), warm to the touch, retains heat well, and is non-porous so it resists mold and is easy to clean. The fiberglass reinforcement adds structural rigidity. ANZZI acrylic tubs feature a glossy finish that resists scratching and discoloration over time. Avoid abrasive cleaners — a soft cloth with mild soap or a non-abrasive bathroom cleaner is all that is needed.
Do drop-in tubs include jets or are they soaking only?
Most drop-in tubs in our collection are soaking tubs — designed for a deep, relaxing soak without jets. Some ANZZI models are available with whirlpool or air jet systems; check the individual product listing for jet options. If hydrotherapy is important to you, our Whirlpool Bathtubs collection offers a wider range of jetted drop-in and freestanding models specifically designed for therapeutic use, including models from Atlantis Whirlpools and EAGO.
Which brands do you carry?
We carry two brands in our drop-in collection: ANZZI — a wide range of modern acrylic drop-in tubs, many bundled with frameless glass shower enclosures, priced from around $800 to $2,000. ANZZI is known for clean, contemporary styling and consistent build quality. Atlantis Whirlpools — premium drop-in and freestanding acrylic tubs, including jetted options, priced from around $1,200 to $3,200. Both brands are sold as authorized dealer with full manufacturer warranties included on every purchase.
Does a drop-in tub require professional installation?
Yes — drop-in tub installation involves building or modifying a deck surround, connecting plumbing (supply lines and drain), and ensuring the tub is properly supported and leveled. This is a multi-trade job that typically requires a plumber and a finish carpenter or tile contractor. The tub itself is straightforward to set in place, but the surrounding deck construction is where most of the work lies. Professional installation ensures the tub is properly sealed against water infiltration and that the plumbing connections are correct. Always confirm the tub's drain location (left, right, or center) before ordering.
Do drop-in tubs add value to a home?
A well-executed drop-in tub installation — with quality tile or stone surround, good lighting, and clean finishes — is one of the most impactful bathroom upgrades for home value and buyer appeal. Built-in tubs photograph well and signal a quality renovation to prospective buyers. The key is the overall execution: a beautiful tub set in a poorly tiled or dated surround loses much of its impact. If you are renovating primarily for resale, invest in quality materials for the surround as much as the tub itself.
