Outdoor Sauna FAQ
What types of outdoor saunas do you carry?
We carry outdoor saunas exclusively from Dundalk LeisureCraft — a Canadian manufacturer specializing in premium traditional outdoor saunas built from Western red cedar. Our collection includes two main styles: Barrel saunas — the classic cylindrical design, available in the Serenity (compact, 2-4 person) and Tranquility (larger) models, as well as the MiniPOD (a modern pod-shaped variation). Cabin saunas — the Georgian Cabin series, available in standard, with-porch, and with-changeroom configurations for 2–6 people. All models are designed for permanent year-round outdoor installation.
Why is a barrel sauna shaped that way — is there a functional reason?
Yes — the barrel shape is genuinely more efficient than a square room. The curved walls naturally circulate hot air in a continuous loop, which means the sauna heats more evenly and reaches temperature faster than a flat-walled equivalent. The curved ceiling also eliminates dead air space at the top corners that would otherwise need to be heated. In practice, a barrel sauna typically heats up 20-30% faster than a comparably sized square cabin sauna, using less fuel or electricity. Beyond efficiency, the curved walls also create a cozy, immersive feel that many users prefer.
Are these saunas durable enough for year-round outdoor use in harsh climates?
Dundalk LeisureCraft saunas are built and tested in Canada — designed for year-round use in climates that include heavy snow loads, sub-zero temperatures, and wet coastal conditions. The key is the material: Western red cedar contains natural oils that resist moisture, insects, and decay without chemical treatment. Cedar handles the repeated heating and cooling cycles of sauna use without warping or cracking. For long-term durability, apply a light coat of exterior wood oil to exposed surfaces once a year and ensure the sauna is placed on a level, well-drained foundation. With proper care, these saunas are built to last decades.
How many people fit, and will tall people be comfortable?
Our barrel models seat 2-4 people comfortably lying on the benches, or more sitting upright. The MiniPOD and Serenity are ideal for couples or solo use with room to recline. For taller users: the barrel's curved walls mean headroom tapers toward the sides — a 6-foot person sitting upright at the center bench has adequate clearance, but the walls slope on the sides. If standing room and unrestricted headroom matter, the Georgian Cabin models offer full rectangular interior space — you can stand comfortably throughout the cabin. The Georgian with changeroom adds a separate entry room for changing and cooling down.
What heater is included, and how long does it take to heat up?
Dundalk LeisureCraft saunas are available with either a wood-burning stove or an electric heater (Harvia brand) depending on the model configuration. Wood-burning stoves deliver the most authentic Finnish sauna experience — the smell of burning wood, the ability to pour water over rocks for steam, and no electricity required. Electric heaters offer the convenience of remote or timed pre-heating. Both options typically bring the sauna to optimal temperature (160-185 degrees Fahrenheit) in 30-45 minutes. Check each product listing for the heater type included or available as an add-on.
What foundation or site preparation is needed?
A level, stable, and well-drained surface is essential. Common foundation options include pressure-treated lumber runners (included or recommended by Dundalk LeisureCraft for barrel models), concrete pavers or a poured concrete pad, or a gravel base with good drainage. The site should be level to within half an inch. For electric-heated models, a dedicated outdoor electrical circuit (typically 240V) is required — a licensed electrician should handle this before installation. Wood-burning models require clearance from overhead structures for the chimney. Most models can be assembled by two people over a weekend following the included instructions.
Outdoor sauna vs indoor infrared sauna: which is better for me?
Choose an outdoor traditional sauna if: you have backyard space, want the authentic high-heat Finnish experience (160-185 degrees), enjoy the ritual of wood-firing and steam (loyly), or are looking for a permanent property feature. Choose an indoor infrared sauna if: you lack outdoor space, want a low-effort daily wellness habit at gentler temperatures (120-140 degrees), or need something ready in under 15 minutes. Both deliver proven health benefits. The outdoor experience tends to feel more immersive and social; the indoor infrared more convenient for daily solo use.
Do outdoor saunas add value to a home?
Yes — well-built outdoor saunas from established brands are one of the most positively received backyard wellness investments for home value. Premium barrel and cabin saunas in good condition can increase home value by $5,000-$15,000 in markets where outdoor living and wellness amenities are valued — particularly in the Pacific Northwest, Colorado, Minnesota, and other areas with strong sauna culture. They photograph exceptionally well and are a meaningful differentiator in real estate listings. Professional installation and quality materials (like Western red cedar) show significantly better than budget DIY builds.
What is the difference between the barrel, MiniPOD, and Georgian Cabin models?
The Serenity and Tranquility Barrel saunas are classic cylindrical designs — efficient, fast-heating, and visually iconic. The Serenity is the more compact option; the Tranquility is wider and longer for more interior space. The MiniPOD is a modern take — a rounded pod shape with panoramic windows at the front, offering a more design-forward aesthetic and a view while you sauna. The Georgian Cabin series is a traditional rectangular cabin with vertical cedar siding — available in standard, with a covered front porch, or with a separate changeroom. The cabin models offer the most interior space and the most authentic traditional Finnish sauna feel.
